We went to see The National gig that was held in the same gay hood as the Mute Math gig and at the same place called Le National. I somehow have grown to love this small gig place, it's acoustics are just the best I've ever experienced and the atmosphere reminds me of Sõbramaja in Tartu, but with much better sound and much better atmosphere, yet the same trashed squeaky wooden floors (that seem to be characteristic for Montreal) and a small balcony.
First we set ourselves up on the balcony as this gig was absolutely sold out, it means I wouldn't have seen a thing downstairs, short as I am, the balcony was perfect, great view, great acoustics. The thing I noticed up there was the chandelier hanging above the main floor, it was sort of hanging on to one chord and it's pits and pieces were all loose and attached with little wires, obviously it was done long time ago as the whole thing looked like it will fall down any minute, crooked swinging poor huge thing.
The warm up band had changed, impressively here in Montreal you can never know for sure what warm up band you get... as Mute Math gig proved and this gig confirmed. Instead of Twilight Sad there was a band/artist called Doveman, now when Doveman stepped on stage I told my honey that I think the guitarists and the drummer look like the guys in The National and after a while they were introduced as The National guys, so amazingly The National were their own warm up band hehe. But Doveman was rather good. Maybe the guy in the cowboy hat was actually the Doveman, but I can't be sure, he never really revealed his face, for the whole gig he hid under his hat, I found it entreating. I quite enjoyed the music though, not really sure what kind of music it is, you can judge it yourself.
Then it was time for The National and my honey had bought me a vodka Guru so I was getting hyped on that and the fact I will be seeing my current absolute favorite band play live right in front of me! But oh boy did they deliver, it was just passion and life on stage. They made a little joke by thanking us naming the club for their honor (Le National) and they were wearing Le National t-shirts, it was adorable. And they interacted with the crowd, I find it as a sign that the band really enjoys their own show and the audience and Montreal audience is really something. One of the guys in the crowd handed his glasses to the singer and the singer was like ,oh well usually we get bra's and panties, this is a first, thank you so much. Once he put the glasses on he was like, wow, I think these are prescription glasses and he handed them back to the guy saying that he would need those to get back home, hehe. Also they said once or twice that you guys are just great, yay. And mostly it seemed like the crowd will never stop screaming and clapping between the songs, so hyped we all were by their perfect gig. They let us go nuts before the encore, we were stamping our feet to the floor, screaming nuts for a long time before they returned, it built us so up for the grand finale. There was a guy in the crowd screaming "Mr November!!!!!" to what the guitarist answered "Well we don't do that song anymore" but much to our pleasure that was exactly the song they played next hehe, teasers! They played mostly the songs from Boxer album, but what they also played was my favorite song of theirs "Abel" introduced by the singer as the song they have no idea what it is about hehe! And they played "About Today" that was so beautiful it brought tears into my eyes, just perfect. They introduced "Baby we'll be fine" as a song for adults and there were more song introductions that I have seem to lost in my head, but they mainly said something before every song and I liked it, also i liked my vodka Guru that is my favorite drink at the moment. The singer is really something he sings into his mike holding it upside down above his head and when he really gets into the song he stands on his tiptoes, getting even higher, he's a tall guy anyways, it just represents how high the song can take you, mmmh. I was smiling all the way trough the gig, grinning like a mad girl, I grinned all the night after as well, jsut so happy , happy, damn. It's hard to put great gigs in words, you just have to see them for yourself and never rely on videos either as a video is not the same...you just have to take my word for it that this was one of the best lives I have ever witnessed, only so far topped by Mute Math, but how can anyone really beat them?
I'll add few videos, one is a part of a long, long violin solo that was just amazing, the violinist was amazing, everyone was, too ad my cellphone camera is not the best for these types of events, it never works properly in dark and makes everything seem further than it actually is, but hope you get the feel.

The National is one of the best band ! You are very lucky ! did they play "Karen" ?
ReplyDeleteNo unfortunately they didn't play Karen that night, well, not that I can remember, but I am pretty sure they didn't.
ReplyDeleteAnd I know I am extremely lucky, never in my wildest dreams I could have imagined actually seeing them live! But it happened, yay.
